OmniPBR Shader Error

Error code: TBD

Documentation in progress: The error code and full message for this entry have not yet been finalized. If you are seeing a shader-related error not covered by other pages in this section, contact support for assistance.

What This Means

This error occurs when an asset uses OmniPBR MDL (Material Definition Language) shaders. Miris requires materials to use a supported shader format — OmniPBR MDL shaders must be distilled to a compatible format before the asset can be uploaded and processed.

Common Causes

  • The asset was created or exported from NVIDIA Omniverse using the default OmniPBR material, which outputs MDL-based shaders that Miris cannot process
  • The asset was saved directly from an Omniverse stage without first converting materials to a standard format (UsdPreviewSurface)

How to Fix It

Your asset's materials need to be converted from OmniPBR MDL to a format Miris supports — either UsdPreviewSurface or MaterialX. There are two main approaches:

Option 1 — Convert in Omniverse (distilling)

Omniverse includes a built-in MDL-to-UsdPreviewSurface converter. "Distilling" is the term for this conversion process — it bakes the OmniPBR material properties down into a simpler, universally-readable format. Detailed steps for this workflow will be linked here once finalized.

Option 2 — Re-apply materials from your source DCC

If your asset was originally modeled in Maya, Houdini, or Blender and brought into Omniverse for material authoring, an alternative is to re-export directly from the source DCC and apply standard PBR materials (not OmniPBR) using UsdPreviewSurface before uploading to Miris.

Caution: This page will be updated with step-by-step distilling instructions once the error code is finalized. If you need help right now, contact support.
